How do I create a syllabus item?
Accessing the Syllabus tool
To access the Syllabus tool, select the Syllabus link in the tool menu.
Creating the syllabus item
To begin creating the new syllabus item, select the Add tab in the menu bar near the top of the screen.
Adding contents and settings for the syllabus item
The Add syllabus... page is displayed, where additional content may be added to the item, settings may be added or adjusted, and the item may be posted, previewed, or saved as a draft.
Enter any text or other content into the Content field.
Note: after entering text or other content into the editor in UVACollab, we recommend using the Accessibility Checker to confirm that the content is fully accessible to all site participants. Select the viewing options
Select the desired viewing setting. By default, the content and attachments associated with most syllabus items are restricted to site participants only. Selecting the World Readable button will make the syllabus item's content and attachments visible to anyone via the Class Details page in the Student Information System (SIS). Selecting the UVa Only button will make the syllabus item's content visible to anyone via the Class Details page, but any attachments will not be accessible from SIS.
Select the calendar options
To display and allow access to the syllabus item and the file attachment during a selected period of time, enter dates into the Start Date and End Date fields, or select the Calendar icons to the right of each field.
Select the notification options
By default, students are not notified each time a syllabus item is created or edited.
To send a lower priority notification, click the Email Notification menu and select Low. Note that this notification will not be sent to students who have opted out of low priority notifications.
To send a higher priority notification, click the Email Notification menu and select High. This notification will be sent to all students.
Adding a file attachment to the syllabus item
To attach a file to the syllabus item, click the Add attachments button to select the correct file attachment.
Locate the file attachment
File attachments may be selected and uploaded from any of the following locations:
- To use a local file, select Choose File to locate and select it.
- To use a file located in the Resources folder of the site, select Attach a copy to the right of the file name.
- To use a file located in another site, select Show other sites and then select the name of the site in which the attachment is located to locate it.
Add the file attachment
After selecting a file, the file name will display beneath the Items to attach heading. Select Continue to add the file to the syllabus item.
Posting the syllabus item
To post the syllabus item, select Add and Publish. To save the syllabus item without posting it, select Save Draft.
