To access the Syllabus tool, click the Syllabus link in the tool menu.

To begin adding the syllabus as a file attachment, select the Add tab in the menu bar near the top of the page.

To enter a title and additional content for the syllabus item:

  1. Enter a title into the Title field;
  2. If desired, enter any additional text or other content into the Content field.

Note: after entering text or other content into the editor in UVACollab, we recommend using the Accessibility Checker to confirm that the content is fully accessible to all site participants. See How do I check my content for accessibility? for more information on the Accessibility Checker and instructions for checking content.

Select the desired viewing setting. By default, the content and attachments associated with most syllabus items are restricted to site participants only. Selecting the World Readable button will make the syllabus item's content and attachments visible to anyone via the Class Details page in the Student Information System (SIS). Selecting the UVa Only button will make the syllabus item's content visible to anyone via the Class Details page, but any attachments will not be accessible from SIS.

After entering any additional text and setting the viewing restrictions, click the Add attachments button to select the correct file attachment.

File attachments may be selected and uploaded from any of the following locations:

  1. To use a local file, click the Choose File button to locate and select it.  
  2. To use a file located in the Resources folder of the site, click Attach a copy (to the right of the file name) to select it.
  3. To use a file located in another site, click Show other sites and then click the name of the site in which the attachment is located to locate and select it.

After selecting a file, the file name will display beneath the Items to attach heading. Click the Continue button to add the file to the syllabus item.

To display and allow access to the syllabus item and the file attachment during a selected period of time, enter dates into the Start Date and End Date fields, or select them by clicking on the Calendar icons to the right of each field.

By default, students are not notified each time a syllabus item is created or edited.

To send a lower priority notification, select Low from the Email Notification dropdown menu. Note that this notification will not be sent to students who have opted out of low priority notifications.

To send a higher priority notification, select High from the Email Notification dropdown menu. This notification will be sent to all students.

After attaching a file, the file name, size, and type will display beneath the Attachments heading. To post the syllabus item with the file attachment, click the Add and Publish button. To save the syllabus item without posting it, click the Save Draft button.

Users accessing the Syllabus tool will see the syllabus item with a link to the file attachment. After clicking the link, the file will open in a new tab or window or begin to download, depending on the web browser preferences.
