What are the Grading and Feedback options for an assessment?

Access the assessment's settings.

Actions menu with Settings selected

For steps to access the Settings page, see How do I inspect and adjust the settings of an assessment?

Select Grading and Feedback.

  1. Select Grading and Feedback on the assessment's Settings page.
  2. Or select the Expand All link to open all the sections on the Settings page.

Recorded Score

If multiple submissions or retakes are allowed, the recorded score determines which submission is counted for the student's assessment grade.  Options include:

  • The submission with the highest score (selected by default),
  • The last submission's score,
  • Or an average score from all submissions.

Anonymous Grading

The default grading setting is to show students' names and IDs to graders.  Select Display anonymous IDs while grading, instead of students' names/IDs to show anonymous submission ID numbers on the assessment's Scores screens.  This allows for unbiased grading of student submissions.

You can change the Anonymous Grading setting after grading to display the students' names with their submissions.

Note: The Anonymous Grading setting differs from the option to release the assessment to Anyone with the link.  Use Anyone with the link (Anonymous survey) to set up a completely anonymous survey such as midterm feedback.

Gradebook Options

To include the assessment scores in the Gradebook, select the checkbox to Send assessment score to Gradebook immediately on submission. If your Gradebook is set up with Categories only or Categories and Weighting, you may also select a gradebook category for the assessment.

To postpone availability of assessment scores to students in the Gradebook, wait until you have graded all question responses, then return to Grading and Feedback settings for the published assessment and enable this setting.

Note: If an existing item in the Gradebook has a title identical to the assessment's title, the score cannot be sent to the gradebook.  You will need to edit the title of either the assessment or the conflicting gradebook item.

If you are using a category in the Gradebook to drop or keep highest scores, and your assessment has a different point value from the other items in the category, you will need to follow the steps to edit your Gradebook settings and enable the Equal Weight option on the category before you can add the assessment to that category.

Types of automatic feedback you can add while editing questions

When you are creating or editing questions, you may enter text or other feedback to display to students automatically.

Feedback for individual questions (enabled by default) allows you to provide feedback for correct and/or incorrect answers for each question.

Feedback for specific answer options (e.g., A, B, C) allows for feedback per answer choice.

Select Feedback for both questions and specific answers to display editors where you can enter feedback for each question and answer option.

See the steps below for screenshots of the editors that appear when the different options are enabled.

Note: You must select either Feedback for specific answer options or both BEFORE authoring or editing a question to add feedback for individual answers.

If you have chosen either Feedback for specific answer options (e.g., A, B, C) or Feedback for both questions and specific answers, you can enter feedback for each answer option when authoring or editing multiple choice or matching questions.

If one of these options is selected:

  • A Feedback editor will appear underneath the editor for each multiple choice answer, with the corresponding letter indicated, e.g., Answer A Feedback (optional), as shown in the screenshot above. Information entered in an Answer Feedback editor can be shown to students who select the corresponding answer.
  • When adding or editing a choice and match for a matching question, Correct Match Feedback and Incorrect Match Feedback editors will display. If a student selects the correct match for a choice, the corresponding Correct Match Feedback can be shown to them. If they pair the match with the wrong choice, the Incorrect Match Feedback can be shown.

Note: For steps to author questions, see How do I add a new question (with the assessment builder)?

Tip: If you have already created a question without Feedback for specific answer options available, enable this setting, then edit the question to add feedback for selections.

Will feedback be displayed to students?

Screenshot of feedback display options, described below. Graphic link opens modal with larger image. Press Escape to exit modal.

You can choose if and when students are able see their submission results. Options include:

  • No, do not display any feedback to the student.  This is the default setting.
  • Yes, show the student feedback while they are taking the assessment. They can change their answers accordingly. This option is recommended for self-tests only. Selecting it will provide the student with a Feedback button on each question page they can use to access the feedback PRIOR to submitting the assessment. They will continue to have access to the feedback after submission.
  • Yes, show feedback on submission allows the student to access the feedback after they have submitted the assessment.
  • Yes, show feedback to the student on specific dates releases assessment feedback at the date(s) and time(s) specified. With this option enabled, you can also choose whether to show feedback only to students whose total score was less than a certain percentage of the total points. See below for more details.

Tips:

  • If you are concerned about students sharing their exam results with one another, you should choose either No, do not display any feedback or Yes, show feedback to the student on specific dates.
  • You can change the feedback settings after an assessment has been completed by going to Published Copies tab in Tests & Quizzes and selecting Settings from the drop-down menu for that assessment.  Many instructors prefer to select No, do not display any feedback and edit the assessment settings after they are done grading to release the grades.

Feedback on specific dates options

Screenshot of feedback date options, described below. Graphic link opens modal with larger image. Press Escape to exit modal.

If you select Yes, show feedback to the student on specific dates:

  1. Enter a Show Feedback Date in the field provided to specify when the feedback will made available to students. So students will not be able to access feedback during the assessment, the Show Feedback Date must be later than the Final Submission Deadline for the assessment and all exceptions, if any exceptions are enabled. If you try to save the settings with a Show Feedback Date that is earlier than the submission deadline, you will be prompted to change it. For more details on exceptions, see How do I give specific students different date or time settings on an assessment?
  2. Optionally, you may enter a Hide Feedback Date to remove access to the feedback after a certain date.
  3. You may also select a checkbox to Only display feedback to the students scoring below a specified percentage of the total points for the assessment. Enter the desired percentage in the box provided, e.g., 90.

What type of feedback will be shown?

If you have enabled feedback, you need to select the type of feedback to release to students. Options include:

  • Only display the student's total score (questions not shown). With this option enabled, students will only be able to view their grade on the assessment overall.
  • Display questions and additional feedback selected below. When enabled, students will be able to access a Feedback link that they can select to review the text of the assessment questions and answer choices. After choosing Display questions and additional feedback selected below, select the items to make available to students. See below for a description of each option.

Feedback Options

When you release the assessment questions, you can also select to display one or more of the following:

  1. Student Response: The answer the student entered in response to each question.  Recommended to allow students to verify their answers.
  2. Answer Key and checkmark for correct answer or X for incorrect: The Answer Key for automatically graded questions, e.g., multiple choice or true false. If Student Response is also selected, a green checkmark icon will display with the student's correct answers and a red X icon will display with the student's incorrect answers.  You can see an example of an Answer Key in How do I view the feedback on my assessment (i.e. test or quiz)?
  3. Feedback for individual questions: Text you entered in the Correct Answer and Incorrect Answer feedback boxes. For more information, see above: Author a question with Feedback for individual questions enabled. Note: Enabling this option also displays Student Response automatically.
  4. Feedback for specific answer options (e.g., A, B, C): Text you entered in the answer Feedback boxes for multiple choice or matching questions. For more information, see above: Author a question with Feedback for specific answer options enabled. Note: To display feedback for specific answers, Student Response must also be selected.
  5. Grader's Comments: Comments you enter in the Scores screens for students.  For more information on entering comments, see How do I grade in Tests & Quizzes?  Graders can enter comments for the overall assessment and/or for individual questions.  To display individual question comments, Student Response must also be selected.
  6. Student's question and part scores: How many points the student received on each question and part. Note: Enabling this option also displays Student Response automatically.
  7. Student's total score: The student's grade for the assessment overall.
  8. Statistics for submissions from all students: The assessment's Statistics screen.  For instructor access to statistics, follow the steps in How do I view statistics about a completed assessment?
