How do I allow Teaching Assistants to grade in Tests & Quizzes?

Those in the Teaching Assistant (TA) role in a site have the ability to view and grade submissions for students in any group that also includes the TA (e.g., rosters with an assigned TA or groups the instructor creates in which they add a teaching assistant).

If a TA is not included on an official course roster for the students whose work they need to grade, an instructor can:

Tip: Allowing each TA to grade specific students only will also allow more than one TA to grade different students simultaneously.

What happens if a TA is not in a group?

If a TA is not included in any groups with students, they will be able to access the Total Scores page for an assessment, but they will not find any students or submissions listed there.

How do I give TAs permission to grade all students?

To give TAs permission to grade all students in the site, you may create a single group that automatically includes all participants in the Teaching Assistant role and all participants in the Student and/or Waitlisted Student role(s).

Go to Site Settings.

Select Site Settings from the tool menu in your site.

Select Manage Groups.

Select Create New Group.

Enter group information.

  1. Enter a Group Title.
  2. You may also add an optional Description for the group.

Add teaching assistants and students to the group.

  1. In the Available Members list, select the following to add to the group:
    • Role: Teaching Assistant
    • Role: Student
  2. Select the right arrow (>) button under Membership controls to assign the selected roles to the group. This will move the roles over to the Assigned Members list.

Tip: You may select both roles in the Assigned Members list to move together as follows:

  • With a mouse: Click on Role: Teaching Assistant, then hold down the Ctrl key (on a PC) or the Command key (on a Mac) on your keyboard while clicking on Role: Student.
  • With a keyboard: Select Role: Teaching Assistant using the up and down arrow keys. Then hold down the Ctrl key (on a PC) or the Command key (on a Mac) and use the arrow keys to navigate to Role: Student. Select it with the spacebar.

Note: If some students are included in the Waitlisted Student role in your site, you will also need to add Role: Waitlisted Student to the group for those students to be graded by TAs.

How do I give a TA permission to grade specific students?

To give a TA permission to grade specific students, you may create a group that includes the teaching assistant and their assigned students.

Go to Site Settings.

Select Site Settings from the tool menu in your site.

Select Manage Groups.

Select Create New Group.

Enter group information.

  1. Enter a Group Title.
  2. You may also add an optional Description for the group.

Add the teaching assistant and their students to the group.

  1. In the Available Members list, select the name of the TA and the name(s) of their assigned student(s) or section roster(s) to add to the group.
  2. Select the right arrow (>) button under Membership controls to assign the selected members or roles to the group. This will move the TA and students over to the Assigned Members list.

Tip: You may select several members in the Assigned Members list to move as follows:

  • With a mouse:
    • To select several consecutive names, click the first name in the list to add. Then hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while clicking the last name in the list to add.
    • To select select several non-consecutive names, hold down the Ctrl key (on a PC) or the Command key (on a Mac) while clicking each name.
  • With a keyboard:
    • To select several consecutive names, select the first name in the list to add using the up and down arrow keys. Then hold down the Shift key and use the arrow keys to navigate down the list of names until you have selected the last name in the list to add.
    • To select several non-consecutive names, select a name in the list to add using the up and down arrow keys. Then hold down the Ctrl key (on a PC) or the Command key (on a Mac) and use the arrow keys to navigate to another name to add. Select the next name with the spacebar.
