How do I make a link to a web page appear in the Tool Menu?

You can add a Web Link tool to your site to place a link to a web page in your site's Tool Menu.

Go to Site Settings.

Select Site Settings from the Tool Menu in your site.

Select the Manage Tools tab.

Select Web Link.

  1. Select the checkbox for Web Link.
  2. Select Continue.

Enter the web site information.

You will be taken to a Configure Tools page.  Under Web Link:

  1. Enter a Title for the Web Link (which will display in the Tool Menu).  For accessibility, you should use meaningful text to describe your link.
  2. In the Source box, enter the address (URL) for the website to link.
  3. If desired, you can add multiple Web Link tools to your Tool Menu at the same time.  Select More Web Link Tools? then select how many more to add (up to 3 more at once), and additional Title and Source boxes will appear for you to enter other sites' information.

Select Continue.

At the bottom of the page, select Continue.

Select Finish.

You will be taken to a confirmation page listing the tools in your site, including the new Web Link(s) to be added.  The new Web Link(s) will display in bold, red text.

At the bottom of the page, select Finish to confirm creating the link(s).

Most Web Links will open automatically in a new tab or window (depending on your internet browser settings).  This includes links to all web pages with non-secure URLs (http://) and some additional secure (https://) web pages that block loading in a frame.

  1. In the Tool Menu of your site, select the Title you entered for the Web Link.
  2. The linked web page will open automatically in a new tab or window (depending on your internet browser settings).
  3. The UVACollab page will display a Re-launch page in a new window link to open the web site again in another tab or window.

If the Web Link points to a web page with a secure (https://) URL and the web page does not block loading within frames, the page will open by default within the UVACollab frame instead of in a new tab or window.  An example of a web page you can display within the UVACollab frame is a Google doc with the sharing setting Anyone with the link can view.

  1. In the Tool Menu of your site, select the Title you entered for the Web Link.
  2. The linked web page will display within the UVACollab window.

Note: If the linked web page is opening within the UVACollab frame and you prefer to have it open in a new tab or window, follow the steps in How do I edit a Web Link? to enable the Open in new window option.
