How do I require completion of a lesson item?

Most of the items that can be added to a lesson page can be made "required"—meaning that students must open the item (if it is a resource) or complete it (if the item is a forum posting, quiz, assignment, question, comment or student page).  Further, the Lessons tool allows instructors to require students to complete one item in the list before allowing access to another item in the list. Lessons tool items that can be required:

  • Add Content items (requires student to open resource or link)
  • Add Assignment items (requires student to submit the assignment)
  • Add Quiz items (requires student to submit the quiz and/or achieve a minimum grade on the quiz)
  • Add Forum Topics items (requires student to create a post on a selected forum topic)
  • Add Question items (requires student to submit an answer to the question)
  • Add Comment items (requires student to add a comment)
  • Add Student Content (requires student to add a new student page)

Lessons tool items that can be set as unavailable until required items above it in the list are completed:

  • Text items
  • Embedded items
  • Content links
  • Assignment links
  • Quiz links
  • Forum Topic links
  • Question items
  • Add Comment items
  • Student Content

To access the Lessons tool, select the Lessons link in the tools menu.  

Instructors using multiple instances of the tool in a single course site may wish to rename the instances to avoid confusion. Also, the tool may appear with another name if site templates are used to create course sites. In the Activities Grid template, the tool is named the Activities tool; in the SCPS template, the tool is named the Class Activities tool; and in the Activities Menu template, multiple instances of the tool are automatically added, each named for a week in the course. All of these names may be changed according to instructor preferences.  

The default page of each instance of the tool contains text that provides more information on the tool and its use.

To edit a lesson item and require students to complete it, locate the item on the lesson page and select the Edit icon to the right of the item title.

To require completion of an item before students proceed to the next lesson item, select Require This Item, then select Update Item.

The asterisk to the left of the item title indicates that the item is required.
